Time Is of the Essence

There are two reasons why you need to clean up your flood-damaged rooms quickly. The first is that flood water is laden with bacteria and likely to contaminate you and your living space. The second is, even after most of the water has receded, mold is likely to form and cause some long-term water damage.

Once you have confirmed that the flooding has stopped, have the standing water pumped out as soon as possible. We recommend that you call a professional rather than do it yourself, because of the bacterial and electrical dangers that standing flood water can pose, and because of the pressure that the water may have inflicted on your home's structure.

Make sure that you have shut down the power and gas before you start the process of draining flood water, to avoid the risk of electric shock. You will also want to wear the correct protective gear any time you go into the flooded area to reduce safety hazards: knee-high rubber boots, rubber gloves, and long-sleeve shirts and pants are a must. You may also want to use a high-quality mask or even a respirator if you think any gas broke free during the flood.

Even after the water is drained and immediate danger has been warded off, you'll need to actively continue to empty the flooded space from wetness and wet items to avoid moisture build-up. Any wet furniture and objects need to be removed and put in a well-ventilated space to dry. Damaged drywall, insulation, and carpeting need to be cut out, and every surface cleaned with the anti-mold product, then thoroughly dried. Then, use a dehumidifier to eliminate any remaining moisture.

Why Did My Home Get Flooded?

There are a number of reasons why places flood. Flooding can come from the air, from the ground, or from within your home's plumbing system itself. Water, following the rules of gravity, takes the path of least resistance and finds its way down through roofs, walls, and floors, often ending up in the basement.

All homes can be at risk of flooding without proper weatherproofing, but even with it. Most often, flooding can be attributed to insufficient drainage around walls, heavy rains or snow melts, a faulty or overwhelmed sump pump, clogged gutters, plumbing leaks, or a combination of these factors.

With the increase in storms caused by the effects of climate change, more homes are at risk of flooding, especially when they are located near a body of water prone to rising, or at a geographical low point.

A Dumpster Can Help

After the initial clean-up, you will need to dispose of the usually large quantities of debris stemming from the flood. These may include furniture and household objects, as well as construction materials such as siding, insulation, flooring, and more. Your debris alone will probably justify the need for a dumpster or, if you have experienced an area-wide flooding event, you can team up with neighbors to rent a single dumpster for multiple homes.

For flood cleanup, you will most likely be ridding yourself of a varied mix of debris, so a regular roll-off dumpster is the most appropriate; just choose "household items" when it is time to select the type of materials. Depending on the amount of debris, you can choose to rent a 10-yd, 15-yd, 20-yd, or 30-yd dumpster for your flood cleanup. Use our sizing guide to evaluate which volume is more appropriate. We will provide you with a generous rental period to make sure you can complete your clean-out safely and thoroughly without any additional stress.

Dumpster rental costs are determined by the type of debris you will be disposing of, the service area, the size and weight limit of the dumpster as well as the rental duration. Hence, dumpster rental prices can vary widely. For free and immediate pricing, you can request an online quote. We always provide totally transparent pricing and no overages as long as you stick to the dumpster's volume and wight limit.

What you put into a dumpster impacts the price you pay, as well as the environment. Typically any non-hazardous material can be put into a dumpster. Most household waste, bulky furniture, construction debris, yard waste, and appliances are perfectly acceptable. However, if any hazardous materials got caught in the flood, you will need to dispose of them separately. Read our guide for a detailed list of what can and can't be disposed of in a dumpster.

If you have some heavy items to dispose of in the flood aftermath, you may need a hand filling up your dumpster with the damaged items. Do not hesitate to enlist family, friends, or professional helpers. This ensures you do not bite off more than you can chew or cause yourself any harm or injury during the clean-out.

Avoiding Future Flooding

Unfortunately, there is only so much you can do to prevent flooding, especially where the natural elements are involved. However, there are some things you can do to protect your home and family from flood disasters.

However, taking steps to waterproof your home will help. Make sure to seal any cracks in your roof, walls, floors, and ceilings. Install a basement waterproofing system such as a french drain, window well drain, or sump pump. If you already have one such draining system installed, you may want to install a backup that runs on a battery or generator, in case your power runs out or the first system gets overwhelmed. Keep your gutters and downspouts clean, and regularly check the sides of your home for pooling water.

Many flooding events are associated with unprecedentedly powerful storms fueled by global warming. Choosing to live a more sustainable lifestyle, and doing business with companies that support the health of our planet, are steps you can take to avoid future flooding. When you rent your dumpster from Sourgum Waste, you are not only erasing the traces of flooding in your home but helping to heal the planet by planting trees to fight global warming.
