When renting a dumpster, it is very important to look into what kind of permits might be needed depending on where it is placed. Individual municipalities determine if a permit is needed and the type of permit. For the Borough or Doylestown in Pennsylvania, a permit for a dumpster or other trash container is needed if it is in the street or public right-of-way. The permit must be acquired from the Department of Building and Zoning located at 57 West Court Street, Doylestown, PA. The fee for unmetered stalls is $25/week and $50/week for metered stalls. The permit application must be filled out and brought to the Department of Building and Zoning building. The process is as follows:
Complete the application and bring it to the building.
Once at the building, the staff will accept the completed application.
When a decision has been made on your application, you will be contacted.
Place your dumpster after the permit has been approved and there is an issued permit in your hand.
A final inspection must be scheduled upon the dumpster’s removal to close the permit.
The requirements are as follows:
The dumpster has to be removed within two weeks of its being placed.
The Borough must approve an extension for the permit if the applicant would like the dumpster placed for longer than two weeks.
The reflective tape must mark the dumpster on all sides. If the dumpster is placed on an arterial or collector highway or where otherwise necessary Type A flashing yellow barricades must be placed facing the direction of traffic.
A dumpster may not obstruct pedestrians, traffic, or sight triangles. It may not cause lanes to be narrowed to less than 12 feet. A dumpster must be placed in a legal parking space and as far as possible from travel lanes.
The applicant is responsible for damage to the road and the dumpster has to be placed on solid lumber that is nominal 2 inches thick to protect the road.
The dumpster must not have any graffiti or commercial advertisements on it.
Dumpsters are not permitted to overflow and must be kept clean.
Hazardous substances, food, and liquids are not allowed to be thrown inside of dumpsters.
The permit must be posted on the dumpster.
The applicant is responsible for calling for inspection when the dumpster is placed and inspection when the dumpster is removed.
Be sure to fill out the dumpster permit application with all of the information on it. Visit the Doylestown page for any more information or call them at (215) 345-4140. Their hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is to be noted that no permit is needed if the dumpster is placed on private property.

You will simply be charged with the standard and prorated overage fee for the extra weight. Many find it hard to judge what dumpster size they will need and trash containers do fill much quicker than anticipated. To be able to effectively predict which size and type of dumpster you may need you will have to consider how much waste there will be and the type of it. Heavier waste is produced by construction and remodeling projects. Other trash items may be thrown in dumpster rentals along with these materials in small amounts but it is best to order a dumpster specifically for waste materials often found in these types of projects such as roofing shingles, concrete, rock, and dirt to avoid exceeding the dumpster weight limit.
